The Amazon rainforest scarcely needs an introduction. It is the world’s largest rainforest and spans nine countries in total, covering 40% of South America. The Amazon represents over half of the planet’s remaining rainforests and is home to an estimated 390 billion individual trees divided into 16,000 species. In fact, the Amazon is home to a tenth of all known species on Earth. However, this vast wilderness is under relentless threat from large-scale farming and ranching, development, logging, mining and climate change. With the majority (60%) of the Amazon within Brazil, the country shoulders huge responsibility. Between 2000 and 2012, the rate of deforestation in Brazil slowed by 75%. However, data from 2017-2018 suggest there has been a 13.7% increase on the previous year with the biggest area of forest cleared since 2008. The fear is that this could continue if the policies of new Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, see fruition.
The North Western Ghats Rainforest of India runs parallel to the Arabian Sea and represents another one of the top-ten biodiversity hot-spots. It’s also a World Heritage Site! With national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and forest reserves, this tropical land has thousands of animal species. The Western Ghats, themselves, belong to a mountain chain that’s older than the Himalayan mountains! The site’s high montane forest ecosystems actually signify some of the best examples of the Indian monsoon system on Earth. India’s North Western Ghats is just as important as other tropical forests, as they track weather patterns across lands. If you’re looking to see an extraordinary landscape with endless adventure possibilities, travel to India to view one of the world’s tropical creations!

Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve: This a forest in the Costa Rican reserve found along Cordillera de Tilaran in Alajuela and Puntarenas provinces. It consists of about 26,000 acres of cloud forest. It’s also known as a “terrain of cloud forest.” The forest is covered with a lush garden of mosses, flowers, ferns and epiphytes on nearly every tree. The forest consists of six ecological zones, over 2000 plant species, 80 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, about 100 amphibian and reptile species and thousands of insects. Sinharaja Forest Reserve: The forest covers a total area of 8,864 square kilometers. The forest which is located at Sri Lakethe reserve is home to about 830 endemic species such as trees, insects, birds, reptile, mammals, and amphibians. It was declared a World Biosphere Reserve in 1978 by UNESCO. It has a dense vegetation hence it’s hard to see wildlife. Some of the wildlife found in this forest includes leopards and elephants.
While it would seem that the wet environment would result in a prolific mosquito population, the water in El Yunque is constantly running down the mountain and rapidly, and it rains about four times a day preventing any standing water, so there are no mosquitoes in the rainforest. You can wear insect repellent if you choose, but if so DO NOT go into any water sources. The chemicals in bug spray are hazardous to the fragile ecosystem. Perhaps just cover with long pants and long-sleeved shirts instead of using repellent. Read additional details on https://www.recordandoyunque.store/blogs/news. In Puerto Rico El Yunque rain forest is a jewel filled with mystery and wonder, also with fear of getting lost there. It is far more immense that we believe. People have been lost years ago never to appear again! The steepness of the ground, the low visibility, the dense vegetation, the huge boulders, endless rivers with trunks and large boulders on the way all can conspire for accidents.
